The Last Laugh

When laughter is cruel or unkind

Laughter can mean different things. It can be an innocent expression of mirth or represent a cruel taunt or jibe. Laughter can bring healing, or it can cause pain. A recent paper in the Journal of Experimental Psychology reports that humour in the form of satire does more damage to the reputation of the individual being targeted than criticism alone. It also seems
to encourage a level of dehumanisation which could limit the ability of the target to recover their reputation. Whenever we face the unjust laughter of others, it's good to remember who has the last laugh. The Bible says that God laughs at His enemies and ours. Not only that; if we are born again, His Spirit inspires us to laugh, bringing healing to our hurt and pain.
