Reaching Out

It's the little things that matter

Reaching out to others is one of the best things we can do. It builds relationships, increases wellbeing, and can lead to profitable outcomes. But sometimes we may hesitate, thinking perhaps that we have so little to bring or to give. Thankfully the truth often is that in this
case, as in many other areas of life, less is more. It’s often the smallest things that make the greatest difference. A smile, a warm handshake, a small word of encouragement - these are just a few examples of small acts that can make a big difference. A recent study at the university of Aberdeen found that bringing up small bits of information about the person you are talking to can quickly and easily convey how much you value them, even in a short exchange. That’s so easy to do, but do we do it? Again, research suggests that we don’t do this as much as we could. Let’s be those who recognise the value of the little things, and who are committed to performing as many small acts of kindness as we can. It’s the little things that matter. Without them there are no big things.
