People can sometimes become jaded when they feel that their government is failing to represent them as they should. In a society that values freedom, it’s important that different voices may be heard and that principled people speak out about current issues of national and personal concern. But what happens when decisions and policies don’t go our way? Writing in PNAS, Armin Granulo and colleagues find that public resistance drops significantly post-implementation of new policies, suggesting that even unpopular policies may be more likely to remain in place once passed. Complacency is one of the great psychological enemies in society. It has rightly been said that “Evil triumphs when good people do nothing.” Have we become complacent, or are we maintaining our stand for what we believe is right and good, despite national and global trends?
