Sometimes when we must make a choice between two options, we will flip a coin. Often this seems like a fair way of deciding something. But does it always feel fair, especially if you choose the losing side! Recent research in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology: Attitudes and Social Cognition, demonstrates that when the other person wins the toss, we are much more likely to feel that the result is somehow less fair than if they had lost. They call this an ‘illusion of unfairness.’ Are there areas in your life where you are labouring under an illusion of unfairness? The notable French mathematician and philosopher Blaise Pascal used the idea of flipping a coin in relation to deciding whether to believe in God. In this toss the stakes are high, determining both our present state and our eternal destiny. Which side have you chosen, and how do you feel about your choice?
