Change Blindness

The importance of focussed attention

Change blindness reveals a humbling truth about how we see the world: our perception is not a perfect recording, but a selective, ever-updating sketch. Even dramatic changes such as an object vanishing, or a person swapping places can slip by entirely if our attention is elsewhere. Far from being a flaw, this quirk of the mind teaches us how deeply our awareness depends on where we choose to focus. Understanding change blindness is more than a curiosity. It’s a reminder of our cognitive limits, an invitation to slow down, notice more, and design environments that protect us from the blind spots in our own minds. By studying it, we can build safer systems, foster empathy for others’ oversights, and cultivate the kind of mindful presence that enriches both individual lives and our shared human experience. The ultimate
antidote to change-blindness will always be the discernment that comes from life in the Spirit. Walking and talking daily with God does not mean that we will see everything, but it does guarantee that we will see what we need to see in the way we need to see it.
