Asking Why

From self-awareness to understanding

Describing the appearance or structure of things has value but understanding how they work is usually even more helpful. Functionalism, a foundational school of thought in psychology, made a profound and lasting contribution by shifting the focus from the structure of the mind to its purpose. Pioneered by thinkers like William James, functionalism emphasised how mental processes help individuals adapt to their environments, an idea that resonated with the evolving scientific spirit of the time. This approach inspired the study of consciousness as a dynamic and fluid experience, paving the way for applied psychology and influencing fields such as education, organisational behaviour, and mental health. By valuing the practical application of psychological knowledge, functionalism empowered the discipline to address
real-world challenges, leaving a legacy of relevance, adaptability, and human-centred inquiry that continues to shape modern psychology. Observing our own personal experience and behaviour can increase our self-awareness, but it’s only when we ask “Why?” that we begin to understand ourselves. Ask yourself today: “Whyhave this thought? Why choose these words? Why act in this way?”
