Anchoring

The power of primacy

The Anchoring Effect is a powerful cognitive bias that reveals how our judgments are subtly shaped by the very first value we encounter, even when that number or idea is arbitrary. When we hear an initial figure, whether it’s the cost of a product, a suggested dosage, or even a target weight, it becomes a psychological “anchor” that
influences all subsequent decisions. This matters deeply because it shows how easily our minds can be nudged off course, but also how we can harness this tendency for good. In the realm of health and wellbeing, setting positive anchors, like imagining small, achievable exercise goals rather than overwhelming ones, or framing dietary changes around gradual improvements instead of extremes, can inspire lasting motivation and reduce the discouragement that comes from unrealistic standards. By recognising the Anchoring Effect, we gain the power not only to resist manipulative influences but also to intentionally set our own anchors, using them as tools to guide healthier choices, foster self-compassion, and create a more balanced and sustainable path toward personal wellbeing. Like ships, we all need anchors, but what anchors will we choose? Life has many storms, but there is an anchor that can hold us in them all - faith in the One Who calms the storm.
