The Default Mode Network

Activity in rest

The Default Mode Network (DMN) is one of the brain’s most fascinating discoveries - a constellation of regions that lights up not when we are busy with tasks, but when we turn inward. Active during rest, daydreaming, memory, and self-reflection, the DMN reveals that stillness is not emptiness, but a space where the mind integrates experience, imagines possibilities, and deepens self-understanding. This network reminds us that moments of quiet and introspection are essential for creativity, meaning-making, and emotional balance. For humanity, understanding the DMN underscores the value of rest in a world obsessed with productivity, reminding us that inner life is as vital as outer achievement. Nurturing this brain network through practices like practising the presence of God, prayer, meditation, mindfulness, and reflective downtime can support mental health, foster resilience, and strengthen our sense of connection to ourselves and others. In Psalm 46:10 we are directed to "Be still and know that I am God." By following this advice, we may hear from Heaven, and in the silence experience the integrative work of the Holy Spirit as our minds process data at an unconscious level and we move towards greater healing and wholeness. At the neural level the DMN is part of this important process.
