It's How You Tell It

Telling your story

Some people are better story tellers than others. I once heard a Shakespearian actor reading the Highway Code, and it was strangely inspiring! Not all of us are gifted actors or presenters, but we all have our stories, the tales of all that we have been through as we have travelled the road of life. I want to focus for a moment today, not on the content of your story, but on how you tell it. The study of literature reveals that there are many different genres. The same events may be reported in many different styles - tragedy, comedy, romance, science fiction, and so on. Think for a moment about how you typically tell your story. For some, you may have 'written' your story as a tragedy involving experiences of pain and loss (perhaps quite justifiably in that none of us are strangers to life's pain!). You are the victim in the story. Without distorting the facts, how could you tell this story in a better way? If you survived these experiences (you're reading this, so I guess you did!), that makes you not merely a victim but a survivor, a hero even! Is it time to start re-telling your story as an epic tale of survival? You'll start to feel very different if you do.
