Hans J. Eysenck (1916-1997) understood motivation and psychopathology primarily through an interaction between biological dispositions, personality dimensions, and learning processes.
Building on the physiological work of Ivan Pavlov (1927) and the drive-learning framework of Clark L. Hull (1943), as well as the anxiety and conditioning theories of Neal E. Miller (1948) and O. H. Mowrer (1940), Eysenck argued that individual differences in temperament (especially Extraversion (E), Neuroticism (N), and later Psychoticism (P)) alter the way people respond to reinforcement, punishment, arousal, and conditioning, thereby influencing their characteristic patterns of motivation and vulnerability to psychological disorder. In his The Dynamics of Anxiety and Hysteria (1957), Eysenck proposed that neurotic symptoms could be understood in terms of learned anxiety interacting with individual differences in nervous-system functioning. Subsequently, his biological-personality model linked Extraversion to differences in cortical arousal and Neuroticism to emotional/autonomic reactivity, while Psychoticism was associated with traits such as impulsivity, aggressiveness, and tough-mindedness.
By 1976, Eysenck’s learning-theory model of neurosis had become more explicitly motivational. He emphasised innate fear patterns, biological “preparedness,” frustrative non-reward, approach–avoidance conflict, and conditioning, arguing that psychopathology arises not simply from learning but from the interaction of learning with inherited individual differences. His 1990 behavioural-genetic work further maintained that approximately half of the variance in major personality dimensions could be attributed to additive genetic factors, while environmental effects were largely individual rather than shared-family effects.
From a Christian theological perspective, Eysenck’s model is valuable insofar as it recognises that human behaviour is embodied, dispositional, and shaped by experience, but it is incomplete if psychopathology and motivation are reduced to biological arousal and conditioning. Scripture presents human motivation as involving not only bodily and learned processes but also the heart, desires, will, moral agency, and relationship to God (Proverbs 4:23; Mark 7:21–23; James 1:14–15), while Romans 7:15–25 depicts the profound conflict between desire and action and Galatians 5:16–25 contrasts disordered desires with the transforming work of the Spirit.
Theologically, Augustine’s account of ordo amoris (the ordering of human loves toward their proper end) and Thomas Aquinas’s account of passions and virtue provide a richer motivational framework. Aquinas argues that passions are not inherently sinful but become morally disordered when they fail to be rightly directed by reason and the good. Thus, a Christian evaluation need not reject Eysenck’s empirical account of temperament, conditioning, and vulnerability. Rather, it can regard these as proximate mechanisms within a larger account of persons created in the image of God, affected by the fall, morally responsible yet also limited and vulnerable, and capable of transformation through grace (Genesis 1:26–27; Romans 12:2; 2 Corinthians 5:17).
In this respect, the distinction made by Eric L. Johnson (1987) between sin and weakness is especially helpful: psychopathology should not simply be equated with sin, because weakness and psychological disorder can involve limitations for which a person is not morally culpable, while genuine moral disorder concerns the misuse of human capacities and desires. Eysenck therefore offers a significant empirical account of how biological temperament and learning may contribute to maladaptive motivation and psychopathology, whereas Christian theology adds questions his natural-scientific framework does not itself answer: what human beings are for, what constitutes rightly ordered desire, how moral responsibility should be understood, and how disordered persons may be restored.
Eysenck’s personality theory offers a useful, though indirect, foundation for understanding personal life strategies (the cognitive and behavioural patterns through which individuals respond to perceived threats and opportunities) because his work proposes that relatively stable biological dispositions influence how people characteristically perceive, approach, avoid, and regulate their environments. Beginning with Dimensions of Personality(1947), Eysenck developed a model centred initially on extraversion–introversion and neuroticism, later adding psychoticism, and argued that these broad dimensions were substantially rooted in biological and genetic differences (Eysenck, 1947, 1967, 1990). In terms of life strategies, high extraversion can be understood as favouring active social engagement, stimulation-seeking, and opportunity exploration, whereas introversion may favour restraint, reflection, and lower-stimulation environments. Neuroticism can predispose individuals toward heightened sensitivity to possible danger, uncertainty, and emotional threat, potentially encouraging vigilance and avoidance. Psychoticism, in Eysenck’s formulation, is associated with greater toughness, impulsivity, aggressiveness, and interpersonal detachment, which may sometimes facilitate competitive or risk-taking strategies but can also generate maladaptive social consequences (Eysenck & Eysenck, 1985; Eysenck, 1990).
His arousal/activation theory further suggests that individuals differ physiologically in their optimal levels of stimulation and consequently may select different environments and behaviours to regulate arousal, making personality relevant to the recurring “if–then” patterns by which people exploit opportunities or protect themselves from threats (Eysenck, 1992). Nevertheless, Eysenck’s account should not be equated with a complete theory of life strategies. Personality dispositions constrain and bias behavioural choices, but conscious goals, learning, relationships, culture, moral commitments, and circumstances also shape the strategies a person adopts. Indeed, Eysenck’s 1990 review acknowledged substantial genetic influences while still recognising environmental contributions to personality. This distinction is especially important: Eysenck’s biologically oriented account can help explain why people possess different temperamental starting points, but Christianity would resist reducing the person to temperament or genetic predisposition, affirming instead that human beings are embodied yet morally and spiritually responsible persons created in the image of God (Genesis 1:26–27), called to exercise wisdom in responding to danger and opportunity (Proverbs 22:3; Ephesians 5:15–16), and capable of character transformation through God’s grace (Romans 12:2; Galatians 5:22–23).
Thus, a Christian interpretation might regard temperament as part of the providential conditions within which life strategies develop, while insisting that the ultimate strategy is not simply self-preservation or maximisation of personal advantage but faithful love of God and neighbour (Matthew 22:37–40), daily practice of God’s presence (Psalm 46:10), active listening to Jesus (Hebrews 12:2), trust in divine providence (Matthew 6:25–34), courageous discernment rather than anxiety (Philippians 4:6–8), and the pursuit of wisdom, righteousness, and service (Micah 6:8; James 1:5). This is also a significant corrective to Eysenck himself, who was personally sceptical of Christianity and described religion primarily as a social and cultural phenomenon. Consequently, our analysis of his approach and the perspective that emerges from it should be understood as both a psychological and theological evaluation of his model rather than as something derived from Eysenck’s own worldview.
