Dual Process Theory

Thinking fast and slow

Dual Process Theory, pioneered by Kahneman and Tversky, illuminates the profound ways our minds navigate the world through two complementary systems of thought: System 1, which is fast, intuitive, and automatic, and System 2, which is slower, deliberate, and analytical. System 1 allows us to react quickly, drawing on instincts and past experiences to make split-second decisions, while System 2 provides the reflective capacity to question, analyse, and solve complex problems. This framework has transformed our understanding of human behaviour, revealing both the strengths of our intuitive judgments and the biases that can cloud them. In the realm of health and wellbeing, recognizing the tension and balance between these systems is vital: System 1 often drives habits, cravings, and snap choices, while System 2 enables mindful reflection, informed decision-making, and long-term planning. By cultivating awareness of these dual processes, individuals can strengthen self-control, make healthier choices, and build resilience, ultimately enhancing both mental clarity and overall wellbeing. Through awareness of our processing and the submission of our thinking to the guidance of the Holy Spirit, our comprehension, decision-making, and action, are all enhanced.
