Whilst the perception of life’s uncertainties leaves many with anxiety, the loss of hope plunges them into a much darker place. For hope is like a candle. Its light need only be small, but like a lit match in a darkened room, it repels the darkness. Put that light out and all that’s left is the
black void of depression and despair. According to the American Psychological Association (APA), depression is ‘a negative affective state, ranging fromunhappiness and discontent to an extreme feeling of sadness, pessimism, and despondency, that interferes with daily life.’ The best treatment of depression will workwith the individual in all dimensions of their personality. Changes of situation may be helpful, behaviour may need to change, physical lifestyle patterns such as exercise and rest may need to change, emotional self-management skills may need to be learnt, aims, goals, and expectations may need to be adjusted, and dysfunctional thinking addressed. Above all, a spiritual remedy is required, for depression is a deep darkness that engulfs not merely the soul but the spirit. Thankfully, there is a Light that shines in spiritual darkness that the darkness cannot overcome (John 1). His name is Jesus. This Light that is God will dispel depression in your soul, if you will receive it. Simply tell Him that you receive His friendship now and that you’ll follow Him from now on. It’s time to turn on the lights!
