Confirmation Bias

Prisons of false belief

Confirmation bias is the deeply human tendency to seek out and favour information that supports what we already believe, while dismissing or overlooking evidence that challenges us. Though natural, this bias can quietly narrow our perspective, keeping us stuck in old habits, unhelpful thought patterns, or unhealthy choices. By learning to recognise and question this pull toward “easy agreement,” we open ourselves to
fuller truths, wiser decisions, and more balanced lives. In the realm of health and personal wellbeing, this awareness is transformative: it allows us to move beyond quick fixes or comforting myths, to embrace evidence-based practices, and to foster resilience by welcoming growth over certainty. Understanding confirmation bias is not about silencing our instincts, but about cultivating the clarity to choose what genuinely nourishes our bodies, minds, and relationships. Confirmation bias can be seen in every area of life. Whether in science or in religion, this is a widespread danger that can hold back freedom, progress, and health. Jesus confronted this phenomenon, particularly in dealing with the religious leaders of His day, and had some very strong words of judgement for them.
