Classical Conditioning

Learning by association

We all build psychological associations with things. Forexample, what do you associate blue skies with? Classical conditioning, discovered by Ivan Pavlov, reveals the profound power of association in shaping behaviour. Pavlov taught his dogs to salivate at the sound of a tuning fork, something dogs would not normally do! At its core, classical conditioning demonstrates that even the most automatic and instinctive responses can be influenced by experience, bridging the gap between the external world and internal reactions. This simple yet elegant principle has illuminated the foundations of learning, not only in animals but also in humans, guiding how we form habits, develop preferences, and even overcome fears. Its contribution to
psychology, education, therapy, and behavioural science is immense, offering tools to transform lives through awareness and intentional change. Classical conditioning reminds us that learning is constant and that growth often begins with the smallest connections. Associations are powerful things, shaping lives and destinies. What do you associate with God? Some people’s conditioning, perhaps based on bad father behaviour, has built a false negative association. If that’s you, challenge the lie today, by turning to Him. As the Bible says, “Taste and see that the LORD is good!” (Psalm 34:8).
